Call for Associate Editors 2024

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: Associate Editor for the Australasian Journal of Educational Technology (AJET).

We invite applications for new Associate Editors to join the existing editorial team of the Australasian Journal of Educational Technology (AJET). 

The context

AJET seeks expressions of interest (EOIs) for the role of Associate Editor. Associate Editors work with the Lead Editors to oversee the article review process and other work of the journal. This call for Associate Editors is to continue to further build our team diversity and expertise, and to ensure the workload is sustainable.

This is a global call. EOIs from Associate Editors in all regions, including outside of Australasia are welcome.

Background

The Australasian Journal of Educational Technology (AJET) is a highly regarded, open access, journal that has international standing and reach. It publishes peer reviewed scholarly research related to the educational use of technologies in the tertiary education sector. AJET is the official journal of the Australasian Society for Computers in Learning in Tertiary Education (ASCILITE) and has an Editorial Board and Management Committee. Since January 2012, AJET has utilised the Online Journal Systems (OJS) as its online journal management and publishing system.

Broad responsibilities - Associate Editor

The main role of Associate Editors is to take carriage of manuscripts assigned to them after initial screening by a Lead Editor. They then assign the articles to suitable reviewers, manage and determine the outcome of the review process, and liaise with authors about their manuscript prior to passing the manuscript to the copyediting process. Associate Editors are senior academics with considerable responsibility in ensuring the high quality of the journal papers. Associate Editors need to be able to act on peer review evaluations and make difficult decisions about rejecting, asking for changes, or accepting submissions. Associate Editors also have opportunities to shape the direction of the journal, engage in strategic planning, and work on strategic projects. Associate Editors are expected to commit a small amount of time each week to ensure the papers assigned to them progress through the system.

Length of appointment

The appointment of Associate Editors will initially be for three years.  

Written expressions of interest must: 

  1. Include a cover letter (2 pages max) in which: 
  • The selection criteria (below) are addressed.
  • Applicants should also confirm that their employer is supportive of them undertaking the role and that they are able to commit the necessary time to undertake the role.
  1. Attach a short CV (max. 4 pages).

Selection criteria - Associate Editors

  1. Experienced educational technology researcher with a well-established track record of high quality journal publications, preferably in the field of educational technologies in post-school contexts;
  2. A strong track record of reviewing articles for journals, preferably educational technology journals;
  3. Excellent English language written communication skills; 
  4. Knowledgeable of a range of research methods; and
  5. Have the time and commitment to dedicate to the role of an Associate Editor.

Proposals for the position of Associate Editor will be reviewed by the Lead Editors. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted to participate in an online interview.
